A Benthic Monitor for Coastal Water Dissolved Oxygen Variation: Mn/Ca Ratios in Tests of an Epifaunal Foraminifer

An appropriate proxy could help to better understand dissolved oxygen variations in the past, helping predict potential outcomes of future environmental changes. In Changjiang Estuary (China), foraminifer Cribrononion subincertum (C. subincertum) shows a distinct population maximum topmost sediment, an indication epifaunal species. Therefore, geochemical composition C. tests record changes region’s bottom water chemistry. Our results showed that Mn/Ca ratios living (Rose-Bengal stained) analyzed by LA-ICP-MS were responsive concentrations, with average foraminiferal three times higher during low-oxygen period than winter. uppermost centimeters wider ranges occurred summer compared winter ranges. imply this benthic species serve as useful monitor representing reliable hypoxia past.
